Music Theory for Young Violinists Book 1 by Mervin Yeow with illustrations by Celleste Ng With “Music Theory for Young Violinists”, Mervin Yeow has written a theory book especially for young violin students. This music theory book aims to teach the fundamentals of music theory from a violin approach by introducing topics that are related to the violin first to ease the learning process of young students. Rather than the keyboard, the fingerboard of the violin is used as a reference for accidentals and semitone/tone learning. The book incorporates: Progressive exercises A child centered approach age appropriate materials. It will appeal to young children with its coloured pictures, exercises using fun stickers and notes to label, trace and colour in. Concepts introduced in Book 1 include: Letter names: sequence of letter names Time names and time values: crotchet, minum, dotted minim, and semibrieve Treble clef notes: Letter names from the lowest G to the A on the E string Simple bowing directions (eg arco, pizz) are introduced to create awareness of the difference between up and down bows. The bass clef is not yet introduced to avoid confusion.
